Peter's Story
Life
Hi there!
After graduating from PHS in 1971, I went to Vassar for two years as a pre-med student. As it turned out, in my sophomore year, my parents moved back to the Netherlands, where we had originally come from. I decided to join them and started studying medicine at the University of Nijmegen. I graduated there in 1981. Among my interesting internships was a 4 month stay in Lesotho, (southern Africa). It had been my intention to go back to Africa for a few years after doing some surgical and obstetric residencies, however, I was offered a training position in Anesthesiology, that I couldn't pass up. I spent 4 1/2 years in Heerlen specializing, after which, I roamed around the country, Maastricht, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, and eventually settled...Expand for more
into private practice in Roermond, a small town in the southeastern part of the country, about 5 miles from the German border. My subspecialty is chronic pain management.
In 1983, I married José Smeets, whom I had met a few years earlier while she was a training to become a nurse in a hospital I was doing my pediatric internship in, which incidently is the hospital I now work in. We have three children, Willeke, Ruben and Lieveke, who are now 25, 23 and 21 years old.
Through classmates.com, I now have contact with a few people from Poughkeepsie, after almost forty years of silence. As I get older, I find myself thinking nostalgically of the good old days when life wasn't so complicated. I suppose this goes with the territory.
So long,
Peter
